Authentic Material vs. Non Authentic Material in EFL Classrooms

The use of authentic and/or non authentic material for teaching in EFL classrooms is undoubtedly an important matter to take into account when talking about students’ good proficiency and a high standard for English teaching.
Authentic material to be used for teaching in EFL classrooms refers to all kind of materials which contain cultural and common aspects from the target language country or countries; and also it must be clearly defined the fact that this kind of material was not created for teaching purposes. Examples of this material to be mentioned are magazines, news papers, movies, etc. furthermore, we realize that this material is specially designed for native speakers of the target language.
On the other hand, non authentic material for teaching in EFL classrooms refers to the material which it was designed with the exclusive purpose of teaching a foreign language as well; it means that it was not created for native speakers of the target language but for those ones who are learning a foreign language.
There are some points to review when thinking about using authentic material for teaching in EFL classrooms some of those ones become into disadvantages while some others would turn in favor of a nice learning experience.
Something which is much discussed is the level. In this case, most of the teachers do not know what is the most appropriate level to use authentic or real material for teaching English. I’d rather say that sometimes there is a terrible fear from some teachers towards using authentic material for teaching English; simply because in some of the cases those teachers are not enough prepared (academically speaking) to perform such a task because the authentic material would contain different structures or vocabulary which is not commonly seen in the “accurate English”. In some other cases, the teacher just refuses to work with authentic material for teaching in his/her classroom because there is the wrong idea that the authentic material is not useful or is an obstacle to achieve what’s already set on the “academic syllabus”. Moreover, there is the case when some teachers “stick” to the use of non authentic material in EFL classrooms; this fact is not wrong at all, but I really consider there should be a balance between learning from the first stages and learning from higher levels. It means that sometimes people pretend to learn a language without taking into consideration cultural aspects of the country or countries where the target language is spoken and also it happens the other way around, when some teachers do not encourage students to reach beyond books and recordings which were made just for you to get high scores but not to know the culture of a foreign language.
